francesca woodman  Fondation Cartier Pour L'Art Contemporain 1998.

This is probably the most beautifully designed book, on any subject. Ever. I love the use of the jump contact sheet being used as endpapers, I love the foldouts for the blueprints, I love the typeface choice, I love the uncoated paper, I love Sloan Rankin's Peach Mumble essay, I love that my school only has the French version because good type design always looks even better when you can't read it, this could go on forever.

francesca woodman  by christopher townsend, phaidon press 2006.

I like this book less, although it has more photographs than the Fondation Cartier Pour L'Art Contemporain book. Most of my dislike is for visual and design reasons, and has nothing to do with content. I have written a very long and (very very) scathing review about it in my blog, which you may find and read at your own convenience; that explains in great detail everything I do not like about this book. Things I do like: journal exerpts and the lovely essay introducing them by George Woodman, a fairly interesting esay by Betsey Bernes, full contents of Some Disordered Interior Geometries (reproduced at a pitifully small scale), and it is readily accessible and can be purchased for less than a bagillion dollars.
